A longer-term upgrade for Phuket’s main gateway
Phuket International Airport is preparing to expand its international terminal as demand exceeds its existing design capacity. For anyone planning a move to Phuket, it is useful infrastructure news to follow, although the work remains a future project.
In an 8 October 2026 report, Thailand’s Public Relations Department quoted the airport director saying detailed design work was undergoing acceptance. Construction was expected to begin in late 2027, with completion planned for 2032. These are reported targets and may change.
The numbers behind the plan
The airport handled 17,234,915 passengers and 105,010 flights during the fiscal year from October 2025 to September 2026. Its current design capacity is 12.5 million passengers a year. The planned international-terminal expansion would add capacity for 5.5 million passengers annually, taking the total to around 18 million.
What this means when choosing a Phuket home
For frequent flyers, airport access belongs on the home-viewing checklist alongside work, schools and everyday errands. A future terminal expansion alone cannot tell you how convenient a particular neighbourhood will feel.
Before committing to a rental, check the journey from the exact property to the airport at the times you normally travel. Compare that with the journeys you make every day. Ask about road access and parking, and visit the property when you can assess surrounding noise for yourself.
Treat the expansion as background for a longer-term move. Base a decision today on the home’s current condition, your actual travel needs, confirmed rental terms and the neighbourhood as it is now.
Keep the timeline in perspective
An airport plan is not evidence that rents or property values will rise, or that road journeys will become faster. As the project develops, confirmed construction milestones will be more useful than predictions.
